How I Practice Gratitude By Finding My Purpose
Every morning long before the sun comes up, my alarm jolts me awake. As I lay there still in my cozy bed wrestling with the idea of staying in a little longer, I eventually decide to plant my feet on the floor as my eyes still burn from waking up way too early.
Getting up from my bed I look back and see my sleeping husband and I’m flooded with gratitude. I’m grateful I get to rise up from a bed where I sleep every night with my best friend since I was 16-years-old. And with all the crazy that’s tried to invade our lives we’re still standing - together.
I’m grateful as I sneak past my baby boy Noah’s crib each morning, as to not wake him up. And the thought comes to mind how thankful am I for another chance. Nine years earlier I was carrying our baby who we were hoping to call Noah, but as I finally arrived at my 2nd trimester we lost that sweet angel in this life. I’m so very thankful for this new beginning.
I’m grateful as I move down the hall and peak in my daughters’ room and check in to see my oldest daughter sleeping. We named her Nevaeh (heaven spelled backward) not to be trendy, but that was the name we chose long before she was conceived. And due to infertility, we prayed for many years before we finally got to meet. And she’s worth every one.
I’m grateful as I glance across the room and see my second daughter Noelle who came along to bless us with her compassion and wisdom flowing well beyond her years. Who’s bubbly and sweet personality keeps a smile fixed on our faces. Oh, how I’m grateful for what she’s taught me about love.
I’m grateful as I walk downstairs to make my first cup of coffee (for that I’m also grateful), and sit in quiet friendship with the Creator of the entire universe. I’m grateful because I know I am loved and that I matter to Him.
I could say it a million times a day. Thank you for blessing me, Lord. But it would never be enough.
I could write my gratitude in a thousand journals and I’d never be able to fully articulate my gratefulness.
The Ultimate Expression of Gratitude
But there’s another way – the ultimate way – I choose to express how grateful I am for this life. That is to honor and live out the very reason I was created
I wasn’t created to simply “be blessed” and enjoy my family. I was created on purpose for a purpose that’s bigger than my own home and life.
The ultimate expression of our gratitude is to live out our purpose in this life.
By first seeking and then walking in our purpose, we’re honoring the One who gave us life in the first place. We sacrifice our own desires and plans in order to partner up with the Creator of the Universe to fulfill His plans.
We were each given the gift of Life and the gift of Purpose. Most of us know how to thank God for the breath in our lungs, but how many of us can fully thank Him for walking in purpose?
Maybe you’re thinking, I just don’t know what my purpose is. I’ve tried, but I get nothing.
Or maybe you know your purpose or have a really good idea, but you’re scared to step into it because of fear. Fear of rejection, failure, lack of resources, or the fact that it didn’t work the last time you tried.
Go for the Real You
If you’re struggling with the concept of identifying your purpose in life. I want to stop you right there and ease your mind. Do me a favor and turn the word PURPOSE into the phrase, THE REAL ME, because that’s what your purpose is – the real you. Don’t you want to become the real you?
I’m going to let you in on something. The real you – your purpose – isn’t out there. It’s inside you. It’ll always be there just like your DNA will be. You can’t get rid of it, but you can bury it.
Some of us need a professional excavation crew to come in and dig the real us out from under years of hurt, misguided advice, lies, and insecurities.
The truth is, you’ll always be restless and searching until you find and become the real you. The real you before life showed up. The “life” that caused you to stop believing in yourself and the best in this life.
If you don’t wake up each and every day at peace, knowing you’re living out your best life – you have the greatest opportunity ever waiting for you. To find out who you really are.
And if for some reason you don’t feel worthy to walk in the life you were designed to live, think again.
If you think for a second you were an accident or an after-thought. You weren’t – not to God. This is what He thinks of you:
Every one of your days was already laid out. And I personally believe those days mentioned are the days intended for us to live. The beautiful plan God set in motion when He created us.
It’s Never too Late
And because God always allows us to make our own choices, most of our lives probably look much different than the one intended. One choice leading down one path and down another. Before we know it – our life is unrecognizable from the one we were created to live.
But it’s never too late. It’s the middle of November – the gratitude season – and if you want to express your gratitude for simply being here; make a promise today.
Make a promise to become who you really are inside. Stop living the lies your mother or father told you. Stop living at the ceiling your teacher said you’d never surpass. Stop living the inner torment of your failures and mistakes. Stop living the hurt he or she did to you.
Allow yourself to be FREE.
We say thank you by living out who He created us to be. Why? Because the real us was created for a very unique purpose. Sadly, nearly two people die every second! (Source)
And that means 2 purposes, 2 answers to the problems we face today also die every second. And though each of those purposes will be planted in another soul to fulfill God’s ultimate plan. No two purposes are alike because each has a special ingredient – YOU.
But before you think for a second you were created to fulfill some master plan where the main focus is the plan itself – think again. God is personal. Your purpose is just as much about you as it is the plan. And He is always thankworthy of our thanksgiving.
This beautiful hand-crafted life was made to fit you like a glove, to provide for you and bless you in ways you could never imagine. I ran from my purpose for many, many years because it never seemed like the “right time”. But I’ll never regret finally owning who I really am.
I am grateful.
